Winnie is a small town in southeastern Texas. It is located about 60 miles east of Houston, Texas and 25 miles southwest of Beaumont, Texas. The town is positioned in Chambers County and is estimated to be one of the largest communities therein. As of 2010, there were approximately 3,254 people living in Winnie, Texas.
Before Winnie was established as a town, the State of Texas opened the eastern section of Chambers County for the purpose of settling. Many settlers arrived in the area and quickly began establishing farms and homes. After the land was opened by the State of Texas, the Gulf and Interstate Railway Company surveyed the land and decided to establish railroad transportation in the area. An engineer named Fox Winnie was sent to the area to decide whether the venture was desirable. After concluding that it was and construction of the railroad began, a town was established along the railroad. The town developed to become modern-day Winnie. Today, Winnie proudly bears its name in honor of Fox Winnie who brought the railroad to the area.
